Important UMO Showcase & Open Mic Information
for Musicians, Singers, and Songwriters
| Purpose of this event: |
To provide a "supportive and professional environment" for musicians, singers,
and songwriters to perform their music in front of a live audience. |
| Who plays: |
Professional Artists who want to Showcase new material,
promote their CD's and upcoming shows or who may just wish to interact
with other musicians in a performance environment.
New Musicians/Singers/Songwriters who wish to utilize an Open
Mic to perfect their performance skills
while benefiting from the learning experience made possible by the presence of
professional artists, other musicians and a live audience.
Experienced Part-time and Weekend Musicians who want to utilize an Open
Mic to express themselves in a formal club
environment in front of a live audience.
|
| Who is the Audience? |
The audience is generally a diverse mix of
villagers, tourists, professional artists, new musicians, industry, media
representatives and others who share a love of both original
and popular music. |
| How It Works: |
To Play At the Showcase / Open Mic - For an Open
Mike Set, artists must print their name or
their group’s name clearly on the sign-up list in the first available
space. For a Showcase Set, (available to Major Label and UMO
"Best of" CD artists only), artists must schedule their
Showcase Set with Joe Budnick. When the artist/group is announced, their instruments should already be
tuned and they should be ready to play. If a performer is not ready, their name
will be scratched from the list and they will have to sign up again in the next
available space on the list.
How Many Songs?
For Open Mike performers
A standard set is 3 songs (sometimes 2
depending on time of day and number of performers).
For Showcase Artists
UMO "Best Of" CD Artists - Play a standard set plus
one additional song for each year they were on an UMO "Best of" CD.
Major Label Artists (past and present) - Play a standard set plus
the number of additional songs negotiated with UMO Rep at the show.
Multiple Sets? - Once
you finish your set you are welcome to sign-up again for another set after
you’ve left the stage. (Note: If you are playing when time
runs out (6 pm), you’ll be allowed to finish your current song and the
end of show announcement will be made.)
Solo Artists or Groups? Musicians are welcome to invite other
musicians to perform with them. HOWEVER, since this is a Showcase & Open Mic
opportunity for the announced performer, as opposed to a jam session, musicians
should not go on stage with the performer UNLESS they have been invited by the
performer to join him/her on stage.
Professional Courtesy In order to maximize the number of times each
performer gets to play, we ask that all artists be prepared to get on and off the stage
quickly before starting and after completing their set. Also, performers should refrain
from lengthy pre-song monologues or excessively long jam sessions, which could end up prohibiting other musicians on the
list from having a chance to play before time runs out.
What About Sound & Lighting? The UMO Sound Engineer will make
every reasonable effort to provide musicians with the best possible sound and
lighting available from the house system. Guitar players should plug their
guitars into the "Instrument Direct Boxes" located on stage as opposed
to using the guitar amplifiers. The house sound system provides superior guitar
sound and can be professionally balanced with singers and other instruments. Use
of the stage amplifiers will be at the risk of poor sound for your performance.
If you have special hook-up needs or questions, see the UMO soundperson.
