Important Information about the UMO Showcase & Open Mike Purpose of event: To provide a "supportive and professional environment" for musicians, singers, and songwriters, solo artists and groups, to perform live music in front of an audience and other musicians. Who Performs? Professional Artists, Major Label and UMO "Best of" Artists can Showcase to promote gigs, sell their CD’s, try out new material, or just to interact with other musicians in a live performance environment. New Musicians, Singers or Songwriters can play the Open Mike to work on their performance skills while benefiting from the experience of interacting with professional artists and other musicians. Experienced Part-time and Weekend Musicians who want to express themselves in a club environment. Summary of How It Works (Artists should read the complete Guidelines Sheet) To play at the Showcase / Open Mic: For an Open Mike Set, artists must print their name or group name clearly on the Open Mike Sign-up Sheet in the first available space. For a Showcase Set, (available to major label & UMO "Best of" CD artists only), artists must schedule their Showcase Set time with Joe Budnick. When the artist/group is announced, their instruments must already be tuned and they should be ready to play. How many songs? – Standard Open Mike Set is 3 songs (sometimes 2 based on number of performers). An UMO "Best of" CD Showcase Set is a standard set plus one song for each year on the CD. "Major Label Artist" Set length varies. Once you finish a set you may sign-up again for another set after you leave the stage. (Note: If end of show is reached (6 p.m. approx.), UMO may end your set after the current song.) Solo Artists or Groups? Musicians are welcome to invite other musicians to perform with them. HOWEVER, since this is a Showcase or Open Mike opportunity for the announced performer as opposed to a jam session, musicians may not go on stage with a performer UNLESS they have been invited by the performer to do so. Also, musicians are not permitted to play their instrument anywhere in the club during the show. What about sound & lighting? UMO engineers will make every reasonable effort to provide musicians with the best possible sound and lighting available from the house system. Guitar players should plug their guitars into the "Instrument Direct Boxes" located on stage as opposed to using the guitar amplifiers. The house sound system provides superior guitar sound and can be professionally balanced with singers and other instruments. Use of the stage amplifiers will be at the risk of poor sound for your performance and will make you ineligible to be on the UMO "Best of" CD. If you have special hook-up needs or questions, see an UMO engineer. (Rev 9.0) ---------(End of Handout) -----------
